Do you ever feel stuck in survival mode?
Maybe you're on edge for no reason or find yourself zoning out into space without recognizing it. Trauma can make it feel like the past is happening in real time. Dissociation can keep you detached from the world around you. You don't have to stay frozen in fight or flight.
What is Trauma?
Trauma is defined by psychological or emotional harm caused by one or more disturbing events. Oftentimes, people think of abuse, neglect, combat, violence, or natural disasters; however, it can also be present as break-ups, housing crises, financial instability, or grief and loss. Trauma is marked by symptoms, such as: nightmares, hypervigilance, avoidance of triggers, irritability, panic attacks, negative self-beliefs, isolation, and dissociation.
What is Dissociation?
Dissociation is the detachment from one's thoughts, feelings, memories, and/or identities as a way to cope with psychological stress. This can look like losing track of time, feeling checked out, detachment from your own body/mind, perceiving the world as a dreamlike state, or experiencing distinct parts of yourself.
